CHAMPS
In the CHAMPS Sports and Fitness Program, students participate in fun, safe, and supervised sports and fitness activities before and after school. The name CHAMPS stands for Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated and Positive Students.
The Benefits of CHAMPS
Participating in CHAMPS can help students:
- Stay active
- Learn new sports and fitness activities that they can continue beyond their school years
- Learn how to work as a team and collaborate with others
Students who are physically active and fit do better in school. Physical activity is important for fitness and strength, healthy weight, and lifelong health. Children aged 6–7 should get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, according to national guidelines.
How Does CHAMPS Work?
Students can participate in activities in fall, winter, and spring seasons. Teacher-coaches supervise activities at their schools, and at DOE-approved gyms and parks. Principals apply for and oversee the CHAMPS program at their school. Schools select the activities they will offer.
Parents, families, and friends are welcome to attend seasonal showcases and other events held throughout the City.
