Below are some best practices for personnel receiving information regarding threats pertaining to NYC DOE schools or school communities:
- Timely notifications are of the upmost importance; the sooner information is shared the sooner the threat can be investigated.
- Upon receiving information of a threat, notifications must be made to the NYPD’s School Safety and NYPD Intelligence Division (see contact information below).
- When providing information to the NYPD, the following information must be shared; if applicable, so that the threat can be investigated properly:
- The name and contact information of the individual who became aware of/reported the threat
- A cell phone number is always preferable so that investigators can speak with the reporter after school hours if the investigation warrants.
- The name and contact information of the individual who became aware of/reported the threat
-
- The person who became aware of/reported the threat a student, teacher, staff member etc.
- If the person reporting the threat is a student, the name and contact information for that student’s parent/guardian.
- If it is believed that a student made the threat and they are present in the school, that student’s parent/guardian should be notified and requested to come to the school.
- The social media platform the threat is being posted on and, any hashtag being utilized.
- When sharing a social media/email threat with the NYPD it is requested that the original post is forwarded if possible. The original post contains vital information to investigators
- If it is known who posted the original threat, provide whether they are a student, teacher, staff member etc. and contact information as well as their parent/guardian’s contact information.
- This information can assist investigators in ascertaining if the person making the threat has access to firearms.
- Once the NYPD is notified of a threat the reporter should make themselves available to be interviewed either by phone or in person by the NYPD (including times outside school hours)
- If it is believed that the threat is a result of bullying this must be reported to the NYPD.
