Know Your Rights with ICE

Dear Community Leaders and Friends,

We know that continued fear-mongering by federal immigration enforcement only increases the public safety and health risks to our communities by further driving people into the shadows and preventing immigrants from reporting crimes and seeking the care they need. During these challenging times, it’s more important than ever for all New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status, to know their rights and protections under the law.

As a reminder, the Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs has developed multilingual fact sheets, videos, and other materials in multiple languages on knowing your rights in an encounter with federal immigration enforcement. They can be found at NYC.gov/KnowYourRights. This page also includes information about ActionNYC, which provides connections to City-funded, free and safe immigration legal help available to all New Yorkers. Immigration status does not matter.

We also wanted to pass along a resource for communities developed by Brooklyn Defender Services, the ACLU, WITNESS, and the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES).These videos provide key know your rights information for how immigrants can protect themselves in confrontations with ICE and have been viewed more than 23 million times since they launched in 2018. Please visit www.wehaverights.us for the videos and more information.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions.

In solidarity and community,
